Sade Sati

By The Astrologic Desk · Editorial and calculation review

Sade sati is the period when transiting Saturn moves through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from the natal Moon. Each phase lasts roughly two and a half years, giving about seven and a half years in total. It is a transit condition rather than a birth chart affliction.

Also called: Shani sade sati, Saturn's seven-and-a-half years.

The rule

Transiting Saturn in the sign before, the same sign as, or the sign after the natal Moon.

Assessed from

  • Natal Moon sign
  • Saturn's current transiting sign

Cancellations and disputes

  • Not cancelled as such — it is a transit that begins and ends on schedule
  • A well-placed natal Saturn is traditionally said to moderate the period

Whether sade sati is inherently negative is contested. Many practitioners read it as a period of consolidation and enforced realism. Because Saturn goes retrograde, exact phase boundaries can be crossed more than once.
