Mangal Dosha

By The Astrologic Desk · Editorial and calculation review

Mangal dosha is present when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagna. Stricter traditions also check the same houses counted from the Moon and from Venus. It is the most commonly cited affliction in Indian marriage matching, and also the most frequently disputed.

Also called: Manglik dosha, Kuja dosha, Chevvai dosham, Angarakha dosha.

The rule

Mars in house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the reference point.

Assessed from

  • Lagna (ascendant) — the primary reference in all traditions
  • Chandra Lagna (the Moon's sign) — checked in most North Indian practice
  • Venus — checked in stricter and in South Indian practice

Cancellations and disputes

  • Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted in Makara
  • Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter
  • Both partners carry the dosha, which is held to neutralise it
  • Mars in the 2nd house when that house falls in Mithuna or Kanya
  • Age-based cancellation, cited in several traditions after 28

The 2nd house is counted in North Indian practice and commonly excluded in South Indian practice. The Venus reference is not used at all in some lineages. This is why the same chart is routinely assessed as manglik by one calculator and not by another.
