Pitra Dosha

By The Astrologic Desk · Editorial and calculation review

Pitra dosha is read from affliction to the Sun and the 9th house, typically by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, and is interpreted as unresolved ancestral obligation. Definitions vary widely between practitioners, and it is one of the most commonly used doshas in remedial selling.

Also called: Pitru dosha, Ancestral affliction.

The rule

Sun conjunct or aspected by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, particularly involving the 9th house or its lord.

Assessed from

  • The Sun's condition
  • The 9th house and its lord
  • Rahu and Ketu placement

Cancellations and disputes

  • A strong, well-placed 9th lord
  • Jupiter aspecting the Sun or the 9th house

There is no single agreed definition. Different lineages use materially different rules, which means a pitra dosha finding is not portable between astrologers. Astrologic describes it but does not compute it, because the rule is not well specified enough to compute honestly.
