Shani Dhaiya
By The Astrologic Desk · Editorial and calculation review
Shani dhaiya is the roughly two-and-a-half year period when transiting Saturn occupies the 4th or 8th sign from the natal Moon. It is shorter than sade sati and distinct from it, though the two are often confused. Ashtama shani specifically refers to the 8th-sign transit.
Also called: Kantaka shani, Ashtama shani.
The rule
Transiting Saturn in the 4th or 8th sign counted from the natal Moon.
Assessed from
- Natal Moon sign
- Saturn's current transiting sign
Cancellations and disputes
- Not cancelled — it is a transit with fixed start and end dates
Some traditions treat only the 8th-sign transit as significant and disregard the 4th. The terminology is used inconsistently, with kantaka shani sometimes reserved for the 4th and ashtama shani for the 8th.
