Navamsa Chart (D9) Calculator

By The Astrologic Desk · Editorial and calculation review

The navamsa, or D9, is the most used divisional chart in Jyotish. Each sign is divided into nine parts of 3°20', and each part maps to a full sign in the D9. It is read alongside the birth chart for marriage and for the underlying strength of each graha — a planet weak in D1 but strong in D9 is read differently.

Questions

How is the navamsa calculated?
Each 30° sign divides into nine navamsas of 3°20'. The starting sign of the sequence depends on the element of the parent sign: fire signs start from Mesha, earth from Makara, air from Tula, and water from Karka.
What does vargottama mean?
A graha is vargottama when it occupies the same sign in both the birth chart and the navamsa. It is traditionally read as a source of stability and strength for that planet.
