A namkaran muhurat is an electional window for formally naming a child. Classical criteria favour a waxing moon, a benefic lagna, and a nakshatra compatible with the child's janma nakshatra. The name itself is often chosen from the pada of that nakshatra.
Why the sky is consulted
The ceremony is treated as the child's first public identity. Electional practice tries to start that identity under a sky that supports speech, recognition and protection rather than under a stressed lagna or a waning, afflicted Moon.
Factors used to elect
- Waxing lunar fortnight (Shukla paksha), avoiding the 4th, 8th, 9th, 14th tithis and Amavasya
- Lagna in a benefic sign, with the 8th house unoccupied by malefics
- Moon well placed from the elected Lagna
- Nakshatra considered supportive of speech and auspicious beginnings (often Rohini, Pushya, Hasta, Revati)
What to avoid
- Rahu kaal and Yamaganda of the weekday
- Eclipse days
- The child's own janma nakshatra if it is a challenging tara for the family
