Mundan, or chudakarana, is the first ceremonial haircut. Tradition prefers odd years of the child's life in some regions and even years in others. The muhurat itself favours a waxing moon, an unafflicted lagna, and nakshatras of gentle, cleansing quality.
Why the sky is consulted
The rite is treated as a shedding of birth residual and an entry into social identity. Electional choices try not to time it during a hard Moon or a malefic-occupied 8th house.
Factors used to elect
- Shukla paksha
- Mrighashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra or Revati
- Lagna unafflicted by Mars in the 8th
What to avoid
- Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi
- The child's sade sati peak if the family follows that constraint
